Laser printers
Once, in university, my supervisor called me over after her lecture and said she needed to see me in her office later that day. It was said in that, “Oh dear. What have I done now?” tone of voice that means bad, bad things are going to happen to you. Very bad things. I turn up at the office not really knowing what to expect. She pulls open the door and tells me to sit down. Spreads my most recent essay submission across her desk.
“Do you notice anything about this?” she ask. “Umm. It’s double spaced?” “No, it’s photocopied. Why is it photocopied? Why would you photocopy an essay? Who wrote this essay?” “Uh. I did, actually. And it’s not photocopied, it’s printed on a laser printer.”
There was a lengthy pause.
“Do you have any questions regarding your 291 submission for next week?”
I didn’t, so she saw me out.
