Random acts of

As I was riding home yesterday the metal support inside the rear axle of my bike cracked, leaving me to do a bit of impromptu repair work on the side of the road. By the time I taken the rear wheel off, worked out what the problem was, and rearranged the parts so that my bike was (temporarily) operational again my hands and shirt were were covered in grease and I must have been looking pretty scary.

A little Japanese woman who had been watching me with interest from her garden across the road called out, “Are you alright?” I replied that I was fine, but thank you. She yelled out something along the lines of “Well, it (the bike being in pieces) sucks for you” and then insisted that I come into her house and clean my hands and have a glass of water. I thought that was a pretty awesome thing to do for a complete stranger.
