Hangi
Last weekend a bunch of Kiwis organised a Hangi at the KRAC in Kobe. Hangi is a Maori word for a method of cooking in a pit oven. It basically involves digging a big hole in the ground, chucking some heated rocks and food in the hole, covering it up and then getting merrily drunk while you wait several hours for the food to cook. Given that it was about a billion degrees that day, any opportunity to lounge around in the shade drinking beer was welcome.
For a mere 1,200 yen you could partake in the festivities which included an enormous plate of food (real meat! peas! kumara! mint sauce!) and also dessert (sponge cake! ice cream! peas!). Actually made me feel a bit homesick as I haven’t seen that kind of food for absolutely ages. I can’t even remember the last time I had roast meat and veggies.
Food aside, Nick and Kanako had some excellent japanese drinking games that we perfected while we sat under the shade cloth. Unfortunately due to the Japanese nature of said games and my relative intoxication at the time, I’ve forgotten all the rules. You’ll just have to take my word that they were indeed fun and make do with some photos.
