Pizza Party 2004

We had a bit of a Pizza Party at Dave’s on Thursday night which was basically an excuse to order a stack of half-price pizza and get drunk on somebody elses beer. Perfect. The problem is there was only one other English teacher in attendance which made it a little difficult to understand what was going on at times but it’s all good practice. It’s interesting how much little social events like this are a benchmark for your improvement in a second language. There’s no comparison for when we arrived and couldn’t string, um, one word together but still it can be frustrating that the more you learn to more you realise you actually know sweet fuck all.

I think the funniest moment was when one of the other teachers who had gone neon glowing red through beer consumption confessed to me that when he had gone to Western Australia and seen the Pinnacles he had found a bit lying on the ground and had taken it home. It was now the centerpiece of his garden and I think he was feeling a bit guilty that he had possibly committed some kind of international crime. When I looked concerned and said “have the police called you yet?” he almost fell over. It took a while to explain that I was joking and his arrest and deportation by CALM probably wasn’t as imminent as he thought.
