Some people say Japan is isolationist and cautious about approaching new things. Rubbish! The small store down the road has been planning a rollout of imported goods entitled “Foreigner Food Hooray!” for over fifteen years now. Today, the first product of a wide selection planned hit the shelves. Strawberry Jam. From Germany. I was so excited I almost wet myself in the store.
Maybe in another 4 years time we can look foward to possibly either imported Peanut Butter or if we’re really lucky Vegemite. Ahh, the impossible dream.

I’m not a huge fan of Costco cause it’s just too much. I’m living by myself and as such I just can’t justify buying twenty bazzilion tonnes of peanut butter just because it’s cheap. I have issues with the fact that everything is in such industrial sized containers. Although they do have awesome bagels.
Oh god, the bagels.
/dribbles.

Nice site! If you are looking for imported gaijin friendly foods in Hyogo, try:
– Sanjirushi which is part of the Santica mall under Flower Rd in Kobe. It’s under the escalator that takes you underground from street level near the Hankyu station. Good for cheap Hardy’s wine (700yen a bottle). Here’s a link with some info: http://www.santica.com/userDetail_top.do?targetId=42
– Costco in Amagasaki…the hugest selection of foreign food and other stuff. You gotta join (I think it was 3000yen a year, but I cried when I saw the cheese counter! Real cheese in BIG sizes..be-utiful) Bring a car and load it up. If you don’t have a car, buy/borrow/steal one…it’s worth it!!! :) You can get an exact location at costco.com .
There is plenty of Peanut Butter, Vegemite and a whole lot more around if you know where to find it!
Cheers
