Heijokyo
Well, after poking around for half a day in Nara, I think I can safely say it’s my favourite place in Japan so far. It’s a lot more managable than Kyoto and has an entirely different character. A lot smaller and more personal. Most of the temples are located in and around a huge park that is home to a large number of incredibly tame deer. Some of the more popular sights are the Daibutsu and the Todaiji Temple, the largest wooden building in the world. Although both were closed by the time I got there, the view at sunset from the top of the nearby Nigatsu-do hall more than made up for it. I think I shall be returned to Nara shortly, there’s plenty more to explore.
