Rokko & Port Islands

Jutting into the huge port around Kobe are two artificial islands, Port Island and Rokko island. Outside of Kobe, Rokko island is probably the more well known of the two, as it houses a number of high class hotels and a pretty exclusive place to live. Running down the middle of the island is an artifical river that runs though the main shopping precinct. One the weekend, the river is full of kids playing while their parents lounge under the shade of the Rokko liner traintracks which run over the top of the river. It’s a pretty cool little place, and has one of the most striking buildings I’ve ever seen. Looking like it’s jumped straight out of a Star Trek movie, the Rokko fashion museum has an enormous domed roof that really has to be seen to be believed. Port island is far less exciting. It’s more of an industrial wonderland, although there is a large theme park at one end which I plan to check out at some time in the future.
